The Ten Commandments and Creation

Exodus 20:11 “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

The Ten Commandments have a very interesting history. When God gave them, there was no doubt that it was the Almighty who chose the very words of each.

In Exodus 19:9, God told Moses to tell the people to get ready to hear directly from God Himself. God said: “And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever.”

Later, God wrote the Law on two tablets of stone. It was God’s own handwriting that He gave to Moses. God told Moses: “and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them” (Ex. 24:12). Exodus 31:18 confirms that God wrote it: “And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

As you know, Moses broke these tablets in anger when he saw the idol that Aaron had made and the people worshipping it. God wanted His people to know for sure that He wrote the commandments. This time, God orders Moses to make two “tables of stone,” and then He says: “and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.”

Now, you may wonder, what this has to do with creation. First, in Exodus 20:11, all the people heard God audibly give the Ten Commandments. Secondly, God Himself wrote them in stone twice, so that there could be no doubt what He said.

Here is what God Himself said about His creation:

  1. Creation was done in six days.
  2. In those six days, he made “heaven and earth,” and the sea.
  3. He also made everything in heaven and earth in six days.

The people that heard God say this, and that may have seen the tables of stone, were very unlikely to have a fanciful explanation for what God said and wrote. When God said “days” – they knew what “days” meant – a literal 24-hour period.

To say that God rested in the seventh age of the earth is pure nonsense. He did not use evolution when He made the earth. After all, how could all those supposed pre-humans (from multi-cellular creatures to monkeys) be made in the “image of God”? What a mockery, and those that say such literally are calling God a liar and that the Bible cannot be believed.

Thank God, we have a reliable Book from a loving Savior and every word of it is inspired and will stand forever. Christian, believe it. If you need more information about creation from a Biblical and scientific viewpoint, go to ICR.org.
