Whiter Than Snow

Psalm 51:7 “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”

The snow has fallen. It is beautiful and white. When snow comes here in the South, it is not that common, but it is refreshing. It tends to clean the air and give everything a fresh and clean look.

It also covers a lot of dirt – usually all of it in the yard. David recognized the cleansing power the Lord gives when a sinner sincerely repents. The verse above was written by him about a year after he committed adultery with Bathsheba.

David knew his sin prevented him from fellowshipping with God as he had before. The whole chapter is his Psalm of repentance and asking God to cleanse him of guilt and sin and restore him in fellowship.

It is important to note that David did not ask God to save him again, but to “restore unto me the joy of thy salvation” (verse 12). He was already saved by faith, but he needed God to “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (verse 10).

Once God cleansed him, David knew that the joy in his heart from God would result in happiness and singing. In verse 14, he says: “Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.”

Christian, has sin caused you to lose your joy and song? Would you like to be made, like David, whiter than snow on the inside? Go to God in prayer, confess known sin, and He will graciously restore your fellowship with Him. If you are not yet a child of God, come to Him for salvation and He will forgive. Christ already paid for your sins – now ask Him for the gift of salvation.
