Where Are You, Adam?

Genesis 3:9 “And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?”

There was a time when Adam and Eve had fled from the presence of God. They had sinned and they were rightfully afraid to face God. When God came calling on them in the Garden of Eden – they hoped He would not find them.

Knowing, however, that they could not hide from His presence, they first tried to cover up their nakedness. No, nakedness or sex was not their sin – disobedience to a simple command was. It is possible that they may have been radiant with light like the angels – and, now that it was gone, they thought fig leaves were better than nothing. They felt guilty and they knew the penalty for sin was death (Gen. 2:17).

People today are no different. They also try to cover their sin with many things. There is often an attempt to adapt some religion and start doing better – perhaps even trying to keep the Ten Commandments. They may even be sorry for their sin. But the penalty for sin is still death – in Hell (“for the wages of sin is death” Romans 6:23), and we are told that “it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

The problem with all these things is that it is not what God wants of you. Jesus had a conversation with some people one day, in John 6:28,29: “Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” Their question, in essence was: we want to be pleasing to God – what must we do?

Jesus answer was not likely to be what they were looking for – and it still is the case with people today. Jesus said that if you want to do what God wants – it starts with believing on His Son Jesus Christ and what He said and what He will do – die for our sins. If you skip this step, Jesus said, you are out of the will of God and your sin is not covered.

The one and only thing that can hide your sin and mine from God is the blood of Jesus Christ. His blood was shed for us because He is the only Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). Nothing else can do the job. Either you are trusting Christ to be the only One that can save you – or you are not. If you are not – let today be the day of your salvation. Don’t be like Adam and Eve who tried a covering of their own making. Accept God’s provision – just like Adam and Eve later did after God had sacrificed two animals for them (Genesis 3:21). Not only will God wash away your record of sin, but He will also put on that account for you – as righteous as God: “Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference” (Romans 3:22).

If you are not yet saved by the blood of Jesus Christ, why not make today the day? Call on God and tell Him you are sorry for sin and ask Him to forgive, cleanse, and save you from Hell because of what Jesus did for you on the Cross. He will save and erase all your sin when you do.
