Malachi 3:6 “For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”
Today I want to start a series of posts about the unchangeableness of God – often referred to as the immutability of God. The fact that He does not change can be very beneficial – but very troublesome – depending on which side of the fence you are on.
In the above verse, God makes it clear in the Bible that He does not change. This enables those that depend on Him to have confidence in His Word, the Bible, and in His character.
The first thing to know about Him is that His holiness never changes. Holiness is what makes Him completely intolerable of and separate from sin – and even incapable of sin. He hated it in Moses’ day and He hates it just as much now. This means that it is still true that “the wages of sin is death…” in Hell (Ro. 6:23).
The second thing is that His Word will never change. What He has declared to be true in the Bible – is true today and it will be true forever:
- 33:11 “The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.”
- 19:21 “There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.”
One more thing that needs mentioning is that His power never changes. This is very difficult to imagine because everything known to man ages and grows weaker with time. Not God. This is seen in Isaiah 40:28:
“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.”
Because He does not change, it is absolutely necessary to learn more about Him and His expectations of us. This means that it is very important to know what He says about life, sin, salvation, Hell, Heaven, forgiveness, rewards, and more. Are you sure that you know Him and are ready to meet Him?
