The Permanent Sealing of the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 1:13,14 “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

Bible salvation is simple to understand and easy to obtain. Because Jesus did it all on the cross for us, the only thing left to do is to repent and believe in Him.

After you believe, the verse above explains what happens next: “ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.” This means that God put His Holy Spirit within you at the moment of salvation (Jesus and God also entered). It is His entrance into your life that brings about change. Notice that nothing is said about baptism or church membership – although both of these are important.

Verse 14 tells how long we are sealed for – “until the redemption of the purchased possession.” Did you notice that He did not say that it is only until you sin again? Or until you become unfaithful?

None of these. When God seals you – it is permanent. The phrase – “the redemption of the purchased possession” is a reference to the rapture. In other words, you cannot become unsealed. If you are saved – you cannot lose it!

The permanence of salvation is why Christians ought to be happy people – the happiest people on earth. Their joy should make them want to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. We certainly also should be thankful because God has given us a gift we are not worthy of and that we could not keep if it were up to us alone.
