The Key to Overcoming Temptation

Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

When the Lord Jesus was facing the Cross, He had gone to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. He was extremely “sorrowful” (vs. 38) and needed to talk to the Father about it. He knew what was coming and He knew where to go to find relief – even in His dark upcoming date with the Cross.

There was never any doubt that He would die on the Cross. It was the will of the Father and He was willingly subject to it.

We also can find comfort in Christ when we face temptation (testing). Satan will come and see to it that God’s children are tempted. The closer you walk to God, the more you will face opposition. It is nothing to fear if you follow our Lord’s example.

There is never any situation you will face but that God can give you victory. Remember that victory is always when His will is done and not your own. Victory does not mean you will have peace and comfort from that point on.

God loves His children and has promised that there is no temptation you will face that He cannot deliver you from (I Corinthians 10:13). All of Satan’s fiery darts will be quenched.

The secret is to go to God in prayer as soon as you see the temptation. This is where it gets hard. You only have seconds before you yield to it if you do not resist immediately.

When you learn to pray and seek His help right away, you will find that “men ought always to pray, and not to faint” (Lk. 18:1). The word “faint” means to quit or be defeated. When looking to God for help, it will not be you that gives in to the temptation. Victory will be yours through Christ.
