I Timothy 2:1-4 “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”
The Bible is very clear that believers need to pray for those “in authority.” The suggestion reveals that our prayers can make a difference in not only local, but also in national and even international events.
Christians should never rest on political candidates alone to do what is right and good. The passage above says that one reason we need to pray is so that Christians “may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” This phrase tells us that it is His will that we do so, because we need God’s intercession to make it possible.
It must be remembered that Satan targets national leaders – and not just spiritual ones. He also targets local authorities, including mayors, councilpersons, local police, etc. Their influence can cause irreparable damage to the cause of the Kingdom and the glory of God.
Although God guides the heart of our leaders, this guidance largely depends on the prayers of His people. Without those prayers, Biblical evidence from the Old Testament seems to suggest that we are largely on our own. God never blesses a nation, city, or church, based solely on its spiritual history.
The last verse in the above passage tells us that God wants all men (and women) to be saved. Praying for others – including our leader’s salvation – must also be a part of our prayers.
Are you praying regularly for our leaders and their salvation, as well as for revival in our land?
