Matthew 11:29 “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”
After salvation, it is the task of every believer to learn more of Christ. Jesus was not merely referring to an intellectual pursuit of facts about Himself, but a personal relationship with Him. Facts about Christ can be learned without salvation – but you cannot learn about Him personally without spending time with Him.
In this verse, Jesus tells us that it is our responsibility to first choose to follow Him. We are to want to become one of His disciples. This is indicated by the word “yoke.” The only way you can do this properly is to spend time with Him in Bible reading, Bible study, and in prayer.
Recent surveys are showing that some “Christians” are believing some extremely questionable things about the Lord Jesus. Many no longer believe the basic teachings of the Bible – which reveals that they are not spending time with Christ or reading their Bible. Some of the things believed now are both heresy and blasphemous.
People that truly learn about Christ are changed into His likeness more and more. Jesus was “meek and lowly in heart” – and those that truly know Him will be, too.
One man that spent much time with Christ in Bible study and prayer was Paul. He learned how valuable that time was that was spent in His presence. He considered any price worth it if he could only learn Christ better. He said: “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8a).
Christian, have you discovered that Christ is worth giving your all to know Him better? Understanding Him will help you have victory over sin and doubts, embolden your witness and effectiveness, and give you better understanding of God’s truth and eternal things.
Just as important, instead of restlessness of spirit, you will be able to “find rest unto your souls” – something that is badly needed in our world today. It all starts when you determine to follow and learn of Him.
