Hebrews 4:16 “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
Yesterday, I talked about a promise that God gave to the believer that he or she could live for Him victoriously. It does not mean sinless perfection: that can only be obtained (received once we are in glory).
The text verse for today reveals four things about getting victory with God’s help. They are:
- As God’s children (you must be sure that you are), you can come to God boldly in prayer and ask for what you need to serve Him.
- It is a Throne of grace. It means that God is willing to give you what you need. He does not need to be begged for it but you must come in faith – believing that He will give what you need. He is more than willing. (Psalm 84:11 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”).
- We can come and ask for our needs because we need mercy. Mercy is what we need when we do not deserve it. God is merciful and He is well aware of our weakness in resisting the world, the flesh, and the Devil.
- Grace will be given “in time of need” – when you need it most – but not beforehand. If you are serious about wanting victory over sin (not just particular sins) God will gladly give grace to enable you to resist it.
This verse emphasizes the need to not try and resist sin in your own power but to call on God for grace to get victory. When He gives the grace and you know that He helped you obtain it – He alone gets the glory. That’s the way He wants it!
