I Corinthians 6:12 “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”
Paul here presents an excellent guideline for believers. Although the Lord Jesus frees the believer from the restrictions of a law-based need for salvation (which never could save anyone anyway), it needs to be remembered that sin still is powerful.
It needs to be realized that sin can get power over you in the form of bad habits and secret sins that are hard to break. Paul knew that although sin could never condemn him to Hell once saved, yet some things will not bring glory to God and can destroy a testimony. They can also rob you of power with God. He chose to avoid those things completely.
The believer that desires to grow in Christ needs to consider what God says about all things in His Word, and think about how it may affect others before making decisions on questionable things. Just because something may be considered legal where you are in the sight of man’s law does not make it right in God’s eyes. God never bases His Word on popular opinion! His Word is eternal and so are the principles in it!
Sometimes even small steps toward something condemned in Scripture can lead to habits that will take you away from a close relationship to God. It can keep you bound and joyless for years at a time.
Thank God, with God’s help, those habits can be broken – no matter what they are. You can be made free of them again and have fresh victory if you turn from them and seek His help. Choose to stick with God’s clear principles – which will require learning more about the Bible and reading it daily. They are right and He will bless you for it.
