Psalms 84:11 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”
This verse reveals three good things about our God and what we can expect from Him. It is a promise that every faithful believer can cling to.
- “The LORD God is a sun and shield”
These two metaphors – “sun and shield” – reveal first that God is our Source of life – as our earthly sun is the source of all life on this planet. He also is our light (spiritual) and only Source of truth. He warms our soul and heart when we are in His presence.
Our God is also our shield. There is no telling how much He protects us from each day – especially if you travel much on the highways around our nation. He also protects us from crime and evil people. Sometimes, He permits us to be touched by these things, but if He does, He has a reason for it – or we have walked out from under His protection.
- “the LORD will give grace and glory”
This phrase reveals His willingness to help us wherever we are. As long as we serve Him according to His Word He gives us grace.
The giving of grace is for much more than just salvation. It is also for service and to resist sin: “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). We also see how that God gives enabling strength when we are weak. He told Paul: “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
- “no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”
This third phrase appears to be kind of a catch-all for everything else you might face as a servant of Christ. Everything that God considers good He will give it. Note that it did not say that He will give you everything you want.
He gives us good things in His own time. He wants us to ask Him for our needs, but you also might mention things you want – especially if you think it may glorify Him. The biggest things He wants you to have are holiness (like Him) and fruit that honors Him (other souls).
Did you notice the condition God gives before He will give these things? We must “walk uprightly,” which means carefully doing His will in the heart, mind, body, and soul.
Are you in a position for Him to bless you like the verse promises? If not, why not get in that place with confession and rededication right now?
