The Unchanged Mission of the New Testament Church

Philippians 1:27 “Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;”

The apostle Paul greatly loved the church at Philippi. He enjoyed being with them and vice versa. They had also greatly helped him at various times in the ministry and with personal needs.

He needed to remind them, however, that their lives are to help point people to Heaven. One way that they were to do this was to live in such a way that it will promote the Gospel of Christ. They were to live as though they were citizens (the meaning of “conversation”) of Heaven – redeemed from their old way of life – now free to serve Christ in holiness.

He also reminded them that they were to stand united for the Gospel’s sake. Division, gossip, and backbiting is not evidence of a godly spirit and it will only harm the cause of Christ. Instead, it reveals spiritual immaturity and detracts from getting the Gospel to those in need of it.

Paul emphasized what this church and other local churches are to be busy doing. They are to be “striving together for the faith of the gospel.” The word “striving” means to be working together and laboring. The cause is to get the Gospel out to as many as possible – both near and far.

I praise God for those pastors and other believers that are actively seeking to get the Gospel out to their communities and abroad. It is what the church is for, and it is one of the main reasons the Holy Spirit was sent. Christ’s commission to the church still stands! Before leaving the earth, He commanded His disciples: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). It is why believers are still here on earth.

Jesus Christ is glorified when Christians obey and fruit is brought forth – and that means the salvation of souls. Christian, are you telling others about Christ?
