The Confidence We Can Put in God

Psalm 61:2 “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

The writer of this Psalm had learned by experience that God is everywhere. This thought is rather unique because the heathen nations around Israel thought that their gods only had jurisdiction over certain areas.

David had put God to the test and discovered that He never failed. He knew he could pray to God from anywhere and that his prayer would be heard – if his sin was confessed.

Jonah put God to the test, too – from the whale’s belly. In Jonah 2:2, Jonah gives his personal testimony: “I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.”

In Psalm 139, David gives three places where God would be sure to hear him: in heaven, in hell, and the uttermost parts of the sea. Then, in verse 10, he says: “Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.” Altogether, it means we can go anywhere in His leading and know that He will hear when we call.

David also said that he could call “when my heart is overwhelmed.” No matter if we sense God’s presence or not, or are confused or troubled, if we have been away from Him and His will, we can still pray in repentance and God will hear. It is at those times when we need God to “lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

God is our Rock because He is faithful, and He keeps His promises. Trust Him. Follow Him. Obey Him, and you will not be disappointed in His power to direct and keep.

And if you are wondering about it, yes, He can keep your soul in salvation after you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to be your Savior. He promised, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37).
