The power that Christ gives us as His children to be overcomers is far greater than anyone can imagine. We sometimes look at getting victory as a struggle, but the Word of God tells us differently: “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us” (Eph. 3:20).

When we look at Christ in time of temptation or trial, we will find that victory is right around the corner. In the text verse, notice the word “always.” In God’s way of thinking, Who wrote this verse, there are no exceptions to how often He can give you victory – and even cause you to have it.

The only question about getting victory in Jesus is how often are we willing to look to Him and His promises for help? He is always willing to give victory, but we must also be thankful when He does.

Once you learn to get a better victory in your life, you can begin to teach others how to have the same kind and an even greater victory than you have. As we seek to get that better victory through Christ, we must also learn to hate sin more – all kinds – not just everyone else’s favorite ones.

Sin can be pleasurable even for a believer – for a short time. Until we admit that we secretly love some sins, real victory is not possible. The day of victory can begin when you ask Christ to help you hate that sin that so easily besets your walk with God.

In recent years, this Bible verse has become one of my favorite. I often mention it as I preach in different places as a challenge to others and certainly need to remind myself of it as well.

This verse has several key things we need to notice today:

1. We need to be thankful to God for any and all victories we enjoy.
2. God is the Author of all victories we have. They come to us because of Christ and through Him. In the flesh, we have no power to get victory over sin and live the way God wants us to live.
3. Note the word “always.” He is more than capable of always giving you and me the victory – if we constantly look to Him for it. It tells me that when you need victory, He is always willing to give it – but we need to walk close to Him for it and resist (not think about it – but do it) the world, the flesh, and the Devil.
4. The end result of the victory He gives is a triumph over sin and the Devil. Victory is needed every hour of every day and we must depend on Him for it. It is not a partial victory while we look to Him for it in faith. Most often it is a question of whether or not we really want it and if you try to get victory in the flesh or let God help you.

Christian, let me encourage you to claim this Bible promise and go to God when you face temptation. Start getting the kind of victory God wants you to have.

Every believer can thank God that He is the One with the power. If humans had control of it, no doubt it would be misused.

Thinking about this verse and God’s power brings many thoughts to my mind that apply to the believer. Here are some of them that I hope will be a blessing to you.

1. The omnipotent God demonstrated His power so we could know it when He created the universe from nothing and then made human beings with love – and redeemed us when we fell:

Genesis chapter 1-3

2. God uses His power for the benefit of the believer – if you love and are serving Him:

Ro. 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

3. Nothing is beyond His power:

Mt. 19:26 “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”

4. God is willing to show His power through and to believers who walk close to Him:

II Chr. 16:9a “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.”

5. God is able to use His power to fulfill His promises and none of them will fail:

Mk. 9:23 “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”

6. God is willing and able to help you defeat Satan and sin because He is much stronger than both:

I Jn. 4:4 “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

II Cor. 2:14 “Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ.”

7. God’s power is able to sustain you when facing trials and uncertainty:

II Cor. 12:9 “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

Praise His Name that He not only has power but that He is willing to use it on your behalf for His glory!
