The above verse reveals that the One called “the Word” existed at the time of creation. Then, the verse goes on to say that “the Word” was “with God” and also “was God.”

A little further down in this same chapter, the Bible makes it clear that the One called “the Word” became man. Verse 14 states: “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

These two verses indicate that Jesus Christ did not begin to exist when He was created in Mary’s womb. The flesh part of Him did start at that miraculous moment, but His true nature existed long before that event.

Many people wonder who is Jesus? The Bible reveals that the One called Jesus is much more than just an ordinary man – Jesus is God in the flesh.

Jesus’ deity is also revealed in that famous verse often used around Christmastime – Isaiah 9:6. This verse says: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” This verse uses two phrases that concern the birth of Jesus. The first is that “a child is born;” this refers to His physical birth as a human. The second phrase, however, speaks of His deity.  “The Son” is not born – He “is given” – as a gift for the salvation of the world.

John 3:16 reveals why the Son of God (Jesus Christ) came from God into this world. The verse says: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

One of the names that Jesus will possess is “everlasting Father.” This shows us that Jesus and God are One and the same Person. There is one God, but He is manifested as three Persons.  It is also important to realize that you cannot be an “eternal Father” without also having an eternal Son!

One more verse – also used at Christmastime, Micah 5:2, also helps us understand that Jesus has lived forever. The verse states: “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” The fact that the One that would be born in Bethlehem – Jesus – has been around “from of old, from everlasting,” reveals He was neither created, nor had His beginning at His human birth.

Jesus Christ entered our world to bring salvation. Have you received it yet?
