The apostle Paul often referred to himself as a “servant.” The word he used for “servant” when referring to himself was not one like a butler, but it referred to a slave – someone with no rights. In more than one such reference, he seemed to take joy in the title (I Corinthians 9:19 “For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.”).

Although the text verse is addressing actual servants, it expresses very well the kind of service that God wants from every believer. The verse brings out three important points for those who want to faithfully serve the Lord Jesus Christ. They are:

  1. Every believer needs to serve Christ with a “single” mind (focused)
  2. Every believer that truly serves Christ cannot be a menpleaser
  3. Every believer that would be faithful needs to serve God with all your heart – giving Him your best all the time.

No one can really serve God with all their heart and mind if there are reservations about what you will or will not do. Servants are hired to do their master’s (employers) will and not their own.

Those who are truly Christ’s servants keep an open ear to His leading and they are ready to do His bidding – whether they want to or not. When God is leading, you can be sure that it will never contradict the Word of God! Remember also that the closer you are to Him, and the more you obey His Word, the more likely you are to know His perfect will.

When it comes to obedience to the Word and to the Spirit of God – how are you doing? Are you really a servant of Christ? Would our Lord agree?
