Through King Solomon, God warns His people not to work toward the goal of getting rich. Although there is not a problem with having money, the problem comes when money has the heart.

Instead, the Christian’s goal is to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). When we do, God promises to meet our needs.

This promise does not mean that a Christian should not work. In fact, the Bible warns that if a man does not work, he should not eat (II Thess. 3:10). God does permit those who work in ministry to be paid by those he ministers to. Even then, many of God’s servants are bi-vocational.

Many people have personally experienced the last part of the text. They worked hard to get money on the stock market, through the lottery, following get-rich quick schemes, and then found that their newly gained money vanished quickly – often through careless spending, inflation, market crashes, etc.

God’s children need to seek to lay up treasure in Heaven instead of down here (Matthew 6:19,20). We do that by obedience to the Word. When you do that, you will find that He gives riches that money cannot buy – peace of heart and mind, Divine guidance, provision, and protection. Those are the things most worth having – along with personal fellowship with your Creator.
