Has anyone else heard of them?

This is a message called Hells Best Kept Secret that teaches about the use of the Law in evangelism.

Watching Ray Comfort's street preaching videos helped to encourage me to go out and street preach as well.

Sure have heard of them. Love the approach they use. Sinners have to realize they are lost before they  can be saved. Amen

However I do not agree with everything Ray Comfort teaches on his "True & False conversion sermon".

I really like their approach to evangelism.  It should not be the only way to do it, but it will work.  Convincing man of their sin is ESSENTIAL.  A person who does not know their need of a savior will not put their trust in him.  There are times however, when going straight at a person like that will feed their stereotype that Christians are self righteous.  Hyles (Lets Go Soulwinning, 1962) wrote that we have to make sure we keep the potential convert on level ground with us.  Never put them below you.

Romans 3:10 says "there is none righteous, no, not one."  The way Hyles would deal with that would be to say "If there are none righteous, that means I am not righteous."  After establishing that you are not righteous, then you can point out that they are not righteous.  It puts you on even ground.  It won't build a total rapport, but it will not be as likely to offend.

That all being said, we can't get stuck into a science of soulwinning.  There are a ton of methods.  There are good methods and there are bad methods.  Even then, sometimes a good method for me is a horrible one for someone else.  I have a friend who has literally jammed his foot into a door to keep the homeowner from shutting it on him.  It worked in that case.  I can assure that had I tried the same tactic I surely would have been hauled off in police car.  His demeanor allowed him to pull that off.  Mine might have gotten me shot.

All in all, we have to trust God, study the word and pray for guidance.  I have read more books on personal soulwinning than any other type of book and one thing I have found in common with them is that they are not the same.  Hyles says to avoid asking if a person is a christian.  Torrey says that is the first question we should ask.  In my opinion the most important question we should ask is "Lord, won't you make me a winner of souls?"

Ray Comfort claims that salvation is by faith alone in Jesus Christ without works, but then turns around and says basically that if you have sinned since being saved you had a false conversion. Must I keep the law to be saved or remain saved? We have all sinned since being saved. Maybe it was a slip of the tongue but that’s how it came across to me.  Don’t get me wrong. He is a great speaker and I admire what he is doing.

Interesting thoughts. I have heard of others who get that impression from him. I know he believes that Christians sin after salvation and do so regularly, he also admits that he himself does. He believes that we are saved unto good works, that we are new creations in Christ and grow in grace.

It could be that Mr. Comfort is referring to the 1 John scriptures that tell us that our habit of continual sin is a marker that we are in fact not saved.  That is not to say that a person must maintain good works to be saved, but that he must be regenerate.  This would seem to be a reasonable statement.  As it is, every preacher out there has been understood at one point to say something that indicates a works salvation, and normally it is nothing more than a simple misunderstanding.
