Psalm 37:31 “The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.”
A lot of things around us are unstable. Besides the unpredictableness of the weather, jobs and economy are certainly two other big areas of instability. Politics… well I don’t even need to talk about that – you already know.
Life is filled with a large degree of uncertainty. None of us is guaranteed tomorrow. The Bible speaks of this unpredictability in Proverbs 27:1: “Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.”
Mistakes in life can be very costly, and you can come to regret wrong decisions for a long time – sometimes for a lifetime. The Christian, however, has a way to alter that uncertainty of life – and the regrets, too.
Instead of rambling about in life and hoping for the best, or trying to be happy, the true child of God has a Guidebook that is infallible. It is an infallible and a reliable Guidebook for life because it has an infallible Author – God Himself.
It is true that God does have a plan for every believer’s life. His plan for your life is perfect and good; but it is not a pain-free, successful beyond imagination kind of life. Also, popularity and riches may not be included in that plan. However, it is a plan that includes peace of heart and mind, real joy, victory over sin, confidence that God does not fail, and a life with no regrets. God’s presence and power will also accompany that life. Riches may not be included in the plan’s half for this world, but there can be unbelievable riches and power in the next.
As the above verse states, the key is to know the Word and have it in your heart. Yes, this means good old-fashioned memorization of important Scriptures. Your steps will be secure because God upholds those who serve Him faithfully according to His Word. It also may not be the most popular position to take in life; but if God is behind you – what does it matter what others say?
If you want a stable life, Christian, it’s time to get in the Word, read, study, memorize, and obey it – with God’s help. Go forward, and don’t look back. Let God prove that “none of his steps shall slide.”
Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
It is not difficult to know when your faith in God is weak. You find it hard to trust Him to do anything that you cannot do for yourself. This also causes you to leave out a lot of praying because you’re not fully convinced it works, or that God will answer your prayers.
A lack of faith, however, has some rather simple causes – each of which can be remedied rather easily. The first thing you must know is that you are truly a child of God through faith in Christ and the new birth. If you do not know that for sure, then it is time to get saved. Nothing else will help.
Three Causes of a Lack of Faith:
1. Sin Not Being Dealt with
The first cause of a lack of faith is sin. That’s right. If you have unconfessed sin in your heart, faith will be weak. Why? Because faith is a fruit of the Spirit, and if you grieve Him, this fruit will not be manifest strongly. Sin can be in the heart only, or in the life, too.
2. Not Doing the Will of God
The second cause of a weak faith is not doing what you know you ought to do. I mention this because some people may not necessarily consider this to be sin. As Christians, they know they ought to go to church, to read the Bible, to give, to pray, etc. – but they do not.
3. Not Using the God-Given Tools for Faith
A third and primary cause of a lack of faith is not employing the tools God gave you to increase it. After you have dealt with the sin and indifference to God’s commands, then you can start to build your faith. You cannot pray for it, pump it up in your mind, or, wish you had more.
God’s method to give us more faith is found in the Bible verse above. We gain and grow in faith by hearing the Word of God. We “hear” it through Bible teaching, Bible preaching, other Christians giving praise to God for His working in their lives through answered prayer, the singing of the hymns and other songs in church and radio, etc. This is one major reason church attendance is so important.
I also want to add that your faith will usually be in proportion to the time you spend in reading and studying the Bible. Little reading produces little faith. More reading produces more faith, as long as you are willing to obey what you read; and much reading and study produces a much larger amount of faith. This principle is true of any believer – whether a preacher like me or in a layperson.
As you can see, faith is based on a sowing and reaping basis. Those who truly have much faith and often see answers to prayer and are bold for Christ are also those who spend a lot of time in the Word. They see God work in powerful ways.
Now, let’s get down to where the rubber meets the road. The question, How much faith do you want today? can only be answered by: How much time are you willing to spend with God today?
Psalm 119:165 “Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.”
There is trouble all around the world. Turmoil, rebellion, and evil abound. Many people are stressed out about it, and political leaders are wringing their hands because there are no easy solutions in sight. The amount of pills and drugs being used, and growing, , along with crime and violence, testifies loudly that there is no peace.
The ones that are capable of keeping a cool head in the midst of trouble ought to be the child of God. This Bible verse reveals that God will enable them to have “great peace”, and it is incapable of being disturbed: “nothing shall offend them.” It certainly is real, as many believers will gladly testify.
No, the verse does not apply to just anyone that calls themselves a Christian, although it is available to all. They must love “thy law.” Of course, this is speaking of the law of God. Not just the Ten Commandments, but all of His principles.
Many believers, unfortunately, have picked up the spirit of the world, which is rebellion. All too often, when a preacher preaches the plain and clear Word of God, some believers will walk away and dismiss those precious truths with: “Well, that is just his opinion.” They never bothered to ask if that is what the Bible teaches or not. In so doing, or with similar statements, they cannot know the “great peace” this verse promises.
People are restless today. They seek entertainment, activity, popularity, drugs, etc., because they are bored and have no peace within. The Christian that loves God and the Word of God can have it every day. From frequent reading of the Word they can understand that the world is not without God’s control – He is still in charge, and He still cares for His own! For those who face the “valley of the shadow of death,” they can find peace there, too.
Christian, the peace of God this verse promises can be yours today. Why not talk to God about it right now, surrender afresh to do His will, and you will discover that it can be yours, too?
Psalm 23:6 “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”
David’s conclusion to this beautiful chapter is most excellent. It really would be hard to find a way to ask for more. It is also important to remember that this verse, along with the rest of the Bible, was inspired by God.
As we consider who is saying this, we realize that it was David – who suffered many things during his life that most people would consider evil. In spite of that, David chalked it up as “goodness and mercy” – when he was confident that God was his Shepherd. Although much of what he went through was certainly painful, he understood that God would never allow anything to happen to him that God did not permit. Yes, David even experienced some chastening, but he confessed it made him a better servant of God.
As a believer learns to stay in the Word of God, he or she learns that God gives faith through it. The Word can enable us to see more of what God is doing than those who don’t spend much time in it. This gives us confidence in His love, even when we can’t see His work on our behalf. As we read, we find verses such as Romans 8:32, which tells us: “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” When He is the Shepherd, and we are closely following Him, He does indeed provide all we need, and He is eternally good.
Perhaps the best part of David’s conclusion is in the last part of the verse: “and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.” Yes, David knew where he was going. There was no doubt in his mind. He had eternal life and he knew it. It was a great source of comfort to him, just as it can be to you, too. I hope and pray that you know that you have eternal life in Christ.
If you are not certain that if you met God today, that you would be in Heaven for sure, I invite you to download my eBook for free: it’s entitled How to Be Saved and Know It(no log-in required). It explains Bible salvation in clear detail.
Hi. This is Evangelist Mike Valles, an ordained independent Baptist preacher in Tennessee. I am starting this blog to talk about three main things greatly needed across America today: Salvation, Revival, and Real Discipleship. Of course, this also includes the state of the church today, and my text will be the Bible (KJV). I also aim to take a stand against some things, too. My greatest concern is the fulfilling of the Great Commission and the growth of believers.
Most believers know that there is a very great need in our land today for God’s real truth. It used to abound. Most politicians don’t even seem to know what truth is anymore. Not only were churches to be found most everywhere in this country in the past, but many of them could even be counted on to preach the truth of the Word of God.
Unfortunately, it is not so today. In addition to the problem of many churches closing their doors for lack of interest, many of them which remain open are no longer preaching the plain, unadulterated Word of God, or being careful to live and present it as God desires. God wants holy living according to His Divine plan! Some of them don’t even want to identify themselves as being churches anymore! The result of this dearth of God’s Word in many churches (and so-called churches) today is clearly evident: little saving truth, little guidance, and little power. No wonder America is in the present mess!
God’s real power in the church is often substituted by various activities. Instead of prayer meetings we have planning committees, instead of fasting we have feasts, and instead of witnessing we have sports and drama – but little fishing! The primary task of the church is not being carried out faithfully in most churches, and most Christians have not won any souls to Christ (let alone even know how to)!
May God help us to get back to the old ways of God’s Word – it worked! When followed properly, souls were saved, churches and Christians grew numerically and spiritually, and our whole nation was affected powerfully by it. Other nations also recognized that this land was blessed by God!
It is time for God’s true people – born-again Christians to get back to God and God’s way. Yes, it may be a little old-fashioned – but God blessed it! He always blesses when His truth is followed wholeheartedly! His Word needs no revisions or updates. God never changes!
God’s people need to humbly come back to Him and seek His face in prayer while there is still time! It seems to be running out! God, however, can turn things around at will! Remember that He said, in II Chronicles 7:14: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” He has never rescinded His promise! Remember that in the Old Testament that whenever God’s people were truly repentant of their sin and really sought His face and pleasure – that God always forgave them and judgment was averted – time and time again!
Like many Christians today, I personally believe that time is running out, not only for America but also for our world as we know it. Our liberty to do our task as Christians and as churches is being limited. Now is the time to seek God and revival. Every Christian needs to be asking God to let the revival in America begin in their heart!
Thank God that there is forgiveness through our precious Savior the Lord Jesus Christ! He paid for all our sins and will gladly forgive if we truly repent of indifference, lackadaisicalness, and worldliness. We need broken hearts and healing from sin. He is willing to help you hate it, too.
Will you join me in prayer for revival – which means a fresh and personal commitment to serve Christ with all your heart?
