The Second Step Toward Revival

Yesterday, I presented the first step toward a real revival. It involved humbling ourselves before a holy God and confessing our sins before Him.

Today, I want to talk about the next step toward revival. There are no shortcuts, and there are no substitutes. The formula I am using is the one that God gave us in II Chronicles 7:14:

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

The second step is found in the phrase: “and pray, and seek my face.” Some of you reading this might think it is two phrases. After thinking about it, though, I think we will see that they go together to form the second requirement for national revival.

Let me gently remind you that in this verse that God is talking to His people, not to unbelievers. True revival always starts in the hearts of the people of God.

The primary reason I believe these two statements are really one is because of the nature of prayer. If we examine our hearts, I think we will find that there are times when we pray but are not really serious about it. We pray to be able to say we prayed. We did a duty and that is all.

In that kind of praying we really did not care to talk to God. We conducted a ritual – made a performance without heart. Of course, I am not saying that this is always the case, or that it is even often the case; but it reveals a lack of sincerity in talking to God.

God is not One to be played with. He often called the bluff of His people. Jesus testified against the religious leaders of His day by saying: “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me” (Mt. 15:8). The Son of God was saying that they have the words – but there is no heart behind those words. In essence He said: Their worship is worthless!

Here is what God really wants, as said by David in Psalm 51:16,17. This was said by him in his confession of his sin with Bathsheba, and with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit: “For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” God is more interested in your heart’s attitude toward Him than in your service or sacrifice.

Believers everywhere need to get serious about seeking God. Churches used to have Wednesday prayer meetings and even all-night prayer meetings. They were determined to get God’s mercy and blessing on their church, their homes, and their nation, and to see the lost around them saved. No wonder God blessed! Some of them even fasted while seeking Him! Now, however, people think it is asking too much to go to prayer meeting and seek God. They want His blessings, but not God!

When people want something today, they save up for it (or buy it on credit). They fix their minds on it and do not let anything distract them from their purpose. Yet how easily we are distracted from God and sincere praying! This is sin, and needs to be confessed to Him!

I realize I am speaking quite plainly. Some readers may not be used to it. However, I aim to speak God’s truth, in love, but please realize, my friend, that someone who only speaks sweet words is like a person trying to rearrange the furniture on the deck when the Titanic is going down! There is no time for it! The ship called America is sinking – and the churches with it! In reality, it is sinking because Christians are not fervently praying!

God wants to hear our prayers. He also wants our hearts and our love. If people only liked you because of your gifts to them, would you really think they were true friends? No you wouldn’t! God also knows very well who it is that really wants to be around Him and talk to Him.

The second step toward genuine revival is to seek God’s face – until He revives you! He wants to cleanse, strengthen and use you in His service. Will you start seeking Him today in confession, dedication, and fresh Holy Spirit powered service? May God help us all to do just that.

The First Step Toward Revival

As many Christian believers already realize, America is in great need for revival. There can be no denying it. Nothing else can restore America to what it once was other than its relationship to God.

The key to America’s blessing is recorded in the songs we as a nation have sung through the years – in our schools, in our assemblies, in our games, and in our churches! Verse 2 of The Star Spangled Banner boldly declares:

“O thus be it ever, when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation!
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Pow’r that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just;
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust!”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!”

In the next couple of posts, I want to talk about revival and how it comes – or how to get it. There are several steps. I will take one step at a time (per post).

The first step, and each of them, is found in II Chronicles 7:14, which says: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray.” As this verse plainly teaches, revival must start with the people of God.

We cannot look for revival to come from the White House, or from Congress. It will not come when certain laws are rescinded, or when special laws are passed – that is not revival.

Nor is there necessarily revival when churches conduct special meetings called revivals; although that may be the beginning of real revival, or a part of it. In fact, revivals often do have their start in a church, or churches.

Believers, God says, need to start by humbling themselves. There is a need to come before God and confess – “I am part of the reason why there is no blessing in America, or in my church!” When we realize we lack His blessing, and stand in need of it, then we can agree with Israel in II Chronicles 6:37: “We have sinned, we have done amiss, and have dealt wickedly.”

We need to face it, we often are not the godly saints we want others to think we are! God looks at our hearts and knows we could have done more! He knows our love for Him and for our fellow man is not always what it ought to be. In fact, sometimes, we don’t even love our spouses or children like we ought!

There needs to be a time of thinking through of our failure and our sins, and a facing up to how we have sinned against Him! No, we have not lost our salvation – just our love and our joy! Other things have crowded it out. Can you take some time and confess it! Be thorough and be broken over those sins. Forsake them.

Tell God you are sorry for those sins, and then trust Him to heal you. Proverbs 28:13 tells us: “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”

Humbly coming before Him and being broken over sin is the first step of revival. It takes time before Him before we can be truly revived. Sometimes we don’t feel remorse over sin immediately. If that is the case, let God begin to soften that heart by spending more time in prayer and in the Word. He will give what is needed.

Psalm 85:6 tells us that God must even give us the right heart to seek Him: “Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?” Revival comes from God, and when we get humble and serious about wanting Him – we can then start to look for it.

Will you spend time before God confessing your sins? That is where revival starts.

America’s Desperate Need for Revival!

America needs the Bible and Revival
The Bible is the Answer to America’s Dilemma

Hi. This is Evangelist Mike Valles, an ordained independent Baptist preacher in Tennessee. I am starting this blog to talk about three main things greatly needed today: Salvation, Revival, and Real Discipleship. Of course, this also includes the state of the church today, and my text will be the Bible (KJV). I also aim to take a stand against some things, too. My greatest concern is the fulfilling of the Great Commission and the growth of believers.

Most believers know that there is a very great need in our land today for God’s real truth. It used to abound. Most politicians don’t even seem to know what truth is anymore. Not only were churches to be found most everywhere in this country in the past, but many of them could even be counted on to preach the truth of the Word of God.

Unfortunately, it is not so today. In addition to the problem of many churches closing their doors for lack of interest, many of them which remain open are no longer preaching the plain, unadulterated Word of God, or being careful to live and present it as God desires. God wants holy living according to His Divine plan! Some of them don’t even want to identify themselves as being churches anymore! The result of this dearth of God’s Word in many churches (and so-called churches) today is clearly evident: little saving truth, little guidance, and little power. No wonder America is in the present mess!

God’s real power in the church is often substituted by various activities. Instead of prayer meetings we have planning committees, instead of fasting we have feasts, and instead of witnessing we have sports and drama – but little fishing! The primary task of the church is not being carried out faithfully in most churches, and most Christians have not won any souls to Christ (let alone even know how to)!

May God help us to get back to the old ways of God’s Word – it worked! When followed properly, souls were saved, churches and Christians grew numerically and spiritually, and our whole nation was affected powerfully by it. Other nations also recognized that this land was blessed by God!

It is time for God’s true people – born-again Christians to get back to God and God’s way. Yes, it may be a little old-fashioned – but God blessed it! He always blesses when His truth is followed wholeheartedly! His Word needs no revisions or updates. God never changes!

God’s people need to humbly come back to Him and seek His face in prayer while there is still time! It seems to be running out! God, however, can turn things around at will! Remember that He said, in II Chronicles 7:14: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” He has never rescinded His promise! Remember that in the Old Testament that whenever God’s people were truly repentant of their sin and really sought His face and pleasure – that God always forgave them and judgment was averted – time and time again!

Like many Christians today, I personally believe that time is running out, not only for America but also for our world as we know it. Our liberty to do our task as Christians and as churches is being limited. Now is the time to seek Him and revival. Every Christian needs to be asking God to let the revival in America begin in their heart!

Thank God that there is forgiveness through our precious Savior the Lord Jesus Christ! He paid for all our sins and will gladly forgive if we truly repent of indifference, lackadaisicalness, and worldliness. We need broken hearts and healing from sin. He is willing to help you hate it, too.

This is my first post on this blog. Will you join me in prayer for revival – which means a fresh and personal commitment to serve Christ with all your heart?
